Mykonos Cruise Port
Mykonos is a popular Greek island known for its stunning beaches, vibrant nightlife, charming architecture, and rich history.
We went on a Mediterranean cruise and spent the day in Mykonos. I’m happy to share our experience at this port and tips to help you plan your day in Mykonos. You can easily skip the cruise excursion in Mykonos and explore it on your own.
Some cruise ships dock by tender and others dock in the old port. You can take the SeaBus (ferry) from the old port. The SeaBus takes about 8 minutes and costs 2 Euros (cash only) each way.
Mykonos Highlights:
Mykonos Town (Chora):
Take a walk through the charming streets of Mykonos Town with its iconic white-washed buildings and blue-domed churches. Chora is a maze of narrow streets, small restaurants, and an endless supply of photo opportunities. Get lost in all the twists and turns, at some point you’ll find yourself at the water or a familiar landmark. This is an excellent place to shop. Explore the boutiques, art galleries, and shops selling local products, jewelry, and souvenirs.
Paraportiani Church:
Paraportiani Church is one of the most iconic and famous churches in Mykonos. It’s covered in white stucco and has five chapels in one building. Four chapels on the ground level and a fifth chapel on the upper level.
Little Venice:
Stroll around Little Venice, The houses in Little Venice are colorful and quaint, with balconies that literally hang over the water’s edge. Some of these buildings date back to the 18th century.
Visit the Windmills
Visit the famous windmills for some great photo opportunities. The iconic windmills of Mykonos, also known as the "Kato Mili," are one of the most famous landmarks on the island. The windmills are located on a hill near Mykonos Town (Chora), overlooking the sea and the harbor. These windmills were originally built by the Venetians in the 16th century and used to grind grain. Today, they are no longer functional but are preserved as part of Mykonos' cultural heritage.
Lunch by the Water:
Enjoy a Greek meal at a waterfront restaurant or a traditional taverna in Mykonos Town. Try traditional dishes like moussaka or souvlaki.
Beaches:
After exploring the town of Mykonos spend the afternoon relaxing on the Beach. Mykonos has a variety of beaches with golden sands and crystal-clear waters. Some well-known beaches include:
Platis Gialos Beach: We took a bus from Fabrika Square to Platis Gialos Beach. It was a beautiful and quiet beach. This beach is great for water sports, and it also has a variety of restaurants and hotels nearby.
Paradise Beach is famous for its lively beach bars and parties. It’s a hotspot for young travelers. I visited Paradise Beach in my 20s, and it definitely had a party vibe.
Super Paradis Beach is similar to Paradise Beach and known for its beach clubs and parties. It’s a great spot for swimming and water sports.
Psarou Beach is a more upscale and luxurious option, known for its high-end beach clubs. It’s a favorite among celebrities and jet-setters.
Agios Stefanos Beach is located near Mykonos Town, this family-friendly beach has calm waters and water sports.
Agrari Beach is popular among nudists and those wanting a quieter beach experience.
Delos archaeological site:
If you have extra time and are interested in history, you can visit the Delos Archaeological Site, a short boat ride away. Delos is an ancient sacred island with well-preserved ruins.
Getting around Mykonos:
Public Buses: Mykonos has a bus network that connects various parts of the island. You can take a bus to reach different beaches, towns, and points of interest. The central bus station is located in Fabrika Square in Mykonos Town.
Taxis: Taxis are readily available, especially in Mykonos Town and at the port. You can hail one on the street or find them at designated taxi stands.
Scooters and ATVs: Renting a scooter or an ATV is a popular and convenient way to explore the island. Many rental shops are available, and they provide flexibility to reach beaches and other places.
Car Rentals: Renting a car is another option if you want more comfort and the ability to explore various parts of the island. Remember that Mykonos has a limited number of roads, so traffic can be congested in peak tourist seasons.
Water Taxis: Water taxis will take you to various beaches and nearby islands. They can be a fun and scenic way to travel.
Remember to plan your activities according to your cruise ship's schedule to ensure you have enough time to return to the ship before departure. Mykonos is a beautiful island with a lot to offer, even on a short visit.
